Managing Deadlines

Its unique how the title manager is looked at as such a status to attain in the workplace when in fact everybody is a manager. Looking at what everybody deals with on a regular day, all everyone does is manage. Specifically time. At one point or another, you've gone into work a little early because you know you had to leave early or take a longer lunch for a specific reason. That's managing time.

While managing time is easy for most people, managing deadlines is quite different. How to prioritize your time when you have competing assignments or just one assignment due and you need to ensure it's done on time. I've seen so many people over the years who have done excellent jobs at managing deadlines and always doing what needs to be done.

Two quick thoughts on managing deadlines:
     1) Complete it before the deadline to make the deadline: This may seem like a weird one but whatever date you're given, give yourself a personal date before that to ensure you are on track

     2) Manage the deadline: Assess how long it will take to actually complete the deadline and try to get it moved to a date that is more realistic. This is of course very difficult but I have seen it work.

While there are other ways I know, I'm curious to know what you know as a way to manage deadlines...let me know.
